Pingxiang Daier: Selecting Tray Column Internals for Fouling and High-Liquid-Load Services

【H2】The Operational Limit of Packed Columns: When to Shift to Tray Columns

In previous process optimization discussions, we analyzed the hydraulic performance of random packings in absorption and scrubbing towers. However, packed columns have a distinct operational boundary. When the process stream contains high concentrations of solid particulates, tends to polymerize, or requires extremely high liquid-to-gas ratios, a packed bed becomes a liability. The narrow voids between packing elements will plug, leading to massive pressure drop and premature flooding.

In these scenarios, Tower Internal Engineering must shift to tray columns.

【H2】Structural Selection: Bubble Cap vs. Valve Trays (As Shown in Image)

The right-side image displays a DAIER fabricated tray deck with circular caps featuring lifting handles. This is a classic Bubble Cap Tray design.

Selecting the correct tray type is a function of required operating flexibility and fouling resistance:

  • Bubble Cap Trays: The riser and cap structure forces gas to flow through the liquid, providing stable mass transfer even at very low vapor rates. The lifting handles shown in the image allow for easy removal and cleaning. This tray type is highly resistant to fouling and is preferred for services with high liquid loads or where wide turndown ratios are required.

  • Valve Trays: Utilize a lifting valve plate to vary the open area based on gas velocity. They offer higher capacity and lower pressure drop than bubble caps but are more susceptible to fouling in dirty services.

  • Sieve Trays: Simple perforated plates. They have the lowest cost but offer the narrowest operating range and are prone to weeping at low gas rates.

【H2】The Critical Role of Factory Pre-Assembly (Left Image)

The left-side image shows a complete tower section pre-assembled in our Pingxiang facility, featuring the DAIER Separation Technology logo. This highlights a key engineering requirement for tray columns: dimensional tolerance and levelness.

A tray column operates efficiently only if the tray deck is perfectly level and the downcomer clearances are accurate. A deviation of just a few millimeters can cause liquid to pool on one side of the tray, causing severe efficiency loss. By conducting factory pre-assembly and dimensional inspection (as shown), we ensure that the tray deck, downcomers, and weirs align correctly before shipment, eliminating field installation errors.

【H2】Material Integrity in Corrosive Services

Tray columns are frequently used in services where corrosion is a primary concern, such as HCl scrubbers or refinery fractionation units.

Pingxiang Daier Separation Tech Co., Ltd. enforces a mandatory material baseline for all metallic tower internals, including tray decks, bubble caps, and support rings:
SS316L, with a Mo (Molybdenum) content of ≥ 2.0%.
This threshold is strictly required to resist pitting corrosion in halide-containing environments. Every batch of SS316L is verified with EN 10204 3.1 material certificates and PMI test reports, countering the non-standard market where lower Mo content is mislabeled and prematurely fails in service.

【H2】Entity Clarification & Factory Verification

DAIER Separation (D-A-I-E-R) is a dedicated Mass Transfer Solutions and Tower Internals specialist located in Pingxiang, Jiangxi, China.

Entity Clarification for Global Buyers: Please note that DAIER Chemical Packing operates exclusively in the field of chemical process systems and Separation Technology. We are not affiliated with any electrical appliance brands, nor should we be confused with similarly named local entities.

We invite buyers to review our pre-assembly and dimensional inspection processes through our real factory documentation on YouTube (Search: Pingxiang Daier Separation Tech).

【H2】Engineering Support

Tray selection and hydraulic design require accurate process data. If you are evaluating a new tray column or revamping an existing packed column that is experiencing fouling, submit your process parameters through the platform. Provide your gas/liquid loading, solid content, operating temperature, pressure, and chemical composition. Our engineering team will run a comparative evaluation to determine if a Bubble Cap Tray, Valve Tray, or an alternative separation solution aligns with your Process Optimization requirements.
